The USS Intrepid was commissioned in August 1943, and is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. The Intrepid participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, most well know is the Battle of Leyte Gulf. It survived five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. At the end of the war it was decommissioned, modernized, and recommissioned as a in the early 1950s as an attack carrier, and later became an antisubmarine carrier. The Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. More than 50,000 men served on board Intrepid, and more than 270 men made the ultimate sacrifice.
Your product was made with wood that was removed from the Intrepid’s main flight deck. The wood has been carefully preserved, stabilized, and turned. By repurposing this historic wood, it can go on as a reminder of the role the Intrepid played in preserving our freedom, but more importantly to honor the 270 men that lost their lives defending freedom.
